Grandma always said to take some broth for that head cold and that chicken soup is good for the soul, but there are some fantastic benefits of homemade bone broth. Make it in your Instant Pot or Slow Cooker.
5 Benefits of Homemade Bone Broth
Homemade bone broth can be made with leftover chicken bones and a pot of water. It doesn’t get much more frugal than that! The broth can then be frozen for later use. Freeze bone broth in ice cube trays and then pop them out and add to freezer bags so you can pull out just what you need for sauces and such. Mason jars can be used to freeze bone broth as well. Let broth cool down a little before adding to jars, and then leave a little bit of room at the top for expansion. Freeze in jars once it has reached room temperature.
2. Joint Health
Homemade bone broth contains glucosamine, which has been reported over the years as being good for the joints. As a matter of fact, many take supplements of glucoseamine for that exact purpose. There is also chondroitin sulfate in bone broth which has been shown to help prevent osteoarthritis.
3. Strong Bones
The building blocks for strong bones include phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium. Each of these are located within the bones that are used for making broth. The natural broth becomes saturated with it as it seeps out from the bones into the broth.
4. Immune Support
The Primal Blueprint: by Mark Sisson touts homemade bone broth as a superfood – needed for immune support. He attributes the high concentration of minerals from the bone marrow for making simple broth a big winner in immune support.
5. Supports Healing
Chicken contains a natural amino acid called cysteine, which can thin the mucus in your lungs. This can be especially important with colds and flu and can aid in the healing process. Slow cooking homemade broth will bring out the amino acid to allow the healing properties to do their best. Dr. Mercola of Mercola.com states that the old adage of taking broth or chicken soup for a cold comes from years of ancient wisdom and this fact.
